Ready to plant your forage or small grains? Want to make sure your rate is dialed in before planting acres at the wrong rate? If you have some bags and a kitchen scale, you can use this handy spreadsheet formula to perform your own rate check in as little as 400 feet. Use your operator's manual rate chart to get close to the correct rate. Attach a bag or bags for each meter run you want to catch. Start seeding and stop after at least 400 feet. Weigh the seed collected per meter. Enter the information into the spreadsheet (using a spreadsheet app makes this mobile friendly) and determine your applied pounds per acre. To determine your new rate setting, divide your target rate by actual rate and multiply that number by your current rate setting. Perform another rate check to ensure your new rate setting is correct.
